Description

Sencha Fukamushi is the signature expression of our tea making philosophy. Crafted for daily enjoyment, it reflects eight decades of hands-on practice and careful attention at every stage of production.

This sencha is steamed in the fukamushi, or deep-steamed, style common to Shizuoka, Japan, allowing the leaves to break down more fully and release a rich, vivid character in the cup. It is then finished at a higher drying temperature (火入れ・hi-ire), a defining approach of the Sugimoto family that brings depth, warmth, and consistency to the tea.

The result is a sencha with a full body, pronounced aroma, and a lingering umami finish that remains satisfying through multiple infusions. Balanced and dependable, it is a tea made not for a single moment, but for everyday brewing.

FAQ

What is sencha?

Sencha is Japan’s most widely enjoyed style of green tea. Made from tea leaves that are steamed shortly after harvest to prevent oxidation, sencha is known for its fresh, vegetal character and balanced combination of sweetness, astringency, and umami.

Where is this tea produced?

Our sencha is produced at the Sugimoto Tea facility in Shizuoka, Japan, one of Japan’s most renowned tea-producing regions. After carefully sourced tea leaves arrive at our facility, our tea is finished and processed in-house to bring out the intended flavor, aroma, and character of each tea.

How do I brew sencha?

Sencha is best brewed with water below boiling temperature. We recommend following the brewing instructions provided for this tea, as using water that is too hot can draw out excessive astringency and bitterness while masking sencha’s delicate sweetness and umami.

For a traditional Japanese tea experience, sencha can be brewed in a kyusu, a Japanese teapot designed specifically for green tea.

Is there caffeine in sencha?

Yes, sencha naturally contains caffeine. Based on our laboratory testing, a serving prepared according to our recommended brewing instructions contains approximately 68 mg of caffeine. The actual amount can vary depending on factors such as water temperature, steeping time, tea-to-water ratio, and the amount of tea used.

What makes Sugimoto's sencha different?

Our sencha is deep-steamed (fukamushi), a traditional Japanese steaming method in which the tea leaves are steamed for longer than standard sencha. The extended steaming breaks down the leaves more thoroughly, creating a tea with a fuller body, rich umami, and a smooth, robust character. Deep-steamed sencha also produces a naturally cloudy infusion and allows more of the tea leaf's fine particles to become suspended in the cup.

Delicioso

Tiene un sabor delicado y exquisito. Un precio excelente para la calidad que posee. Invita a una ceremonia de té, aunque no sea matcha.

Perfect! Sooooo Japanese.

I ordered this because I have not traveled to Japan since COVID and was running out of tea. Opened the new bag, spooned some leaves into the tea strainer, and added the hot water. I knew immediately that this was my salvation. The aroma coming from my cup was 100% Japanese, it was fantastic.

The best Sencha I have had. Way surpases my expectation

This tea took my love for green teas to another level. I love the aroma of the tea before it is even brewed. It has a very vegetal taste that blends with the aroma that I cannot get enough of. It is now the standard against which every sencha tea I drink will be measured.

Best Ever

I have been exploring sencha teas for about a year and this is undoubtedly the best sencha I have tasted. It is rich and complex, and it is the only sencha I want to drink!

Enrich Sencha Loose Leaf

This is my favorite-- makes a very nice cup of tea with appealing color, aroma, and flavor. Very reliable quality.
