Description

Sencha Fukamushi is the signature expression of our tea making philosophy. Crafted for daily enjoyment, it reflects eight decades of hands-on practice and careful attention at every stage of production.

This sencha is steamed in the fukamushi, or deep-steamed, style common to Shizuoka, Japan, allowing the leaves to break down more fully and release a rich, vivid character in the cup. It is then finished at a higher drying temperature (火入れ・hi-ire), a defining approach of the Sugimoto family that brings depth, warmth, and consistency to the tea.

The result is a sencha with a full body, pronounced aroma, and a lingering umami finish that remains satisfying through multiple infusions. Balanced and dependable, it is a tea made not for a single moment, but for everyday brewing.

FAQ

What is sencha?

Sencha is Japan’s most widely enjoyed style of green tea. Made from tea leaves that are steamed shortly after harvest to prevent oxidation, sencha is known for its fresh, vegetal character and balanced combination of sweetness, astringency, and umami.

Where is this tea produced?

Our sencha is produced at the Sugimoto Tea facility in Shizuoka, Japan, one of Japan’s most renowned tea-producing regions. After carefully sourced tea leaves arrive at our facility, our tea is finished and processed in-house to bring out the intended flavor, aroma, and character of each tea.

How do I brew sencha?

Sencha is best brewed with water below boiling temperature. We recommend following the brewing instructions provided for this tea, as using water that is too hot can draw out excessive astringency and bitterness while masking sencha’s delicate sweetness and umami.

For a traditional Japanese tea experience, sencha can be brewed in a kyusu, a Japanese teapot designed specifically for green tea.

Is there caffeine in sencha?

Yes, sencha naturally contains caffeine. Based on our laboratory testing, a serving prepared according to our recommended brewing instructions contains approximately 68 mg of caffeine. The actual amount can vary depending on factors such as water temperature, steeping time, tea-to-water ratio, and the amount of tea used.

What makes Sugimoto's sencha different?

Our sencha is deep-steamed (fukamushi), a traditional Japanese steaming method in which the tea leaves are steamed for longer than standard sencha. The extended steaming breaks down the leaves more thoroughly, creating a tea with a fuller body, rich umami, and a smooth, robust character. Deep-steamed sencha also produces a naturally cloudy infusion and allows more of the tea leaf's fine particles to become suspended in the cup.

Refreshing

A light, refreshing tea. I love this for a late afternoon brew to calm and revive.

Affordable good value and very aromatic

Able to rebrew multiple times or cold brew. Enjoying this variety of tea more and more

Sencha Fukamushi

I have been enjoying Sugimoto's Sencha Fukamushi for years. I've periodically tried the other quality and premium sencha variations but I always go back to the Fukamushi.

A fantastic tasting tea

My favorite tea from this company

Enrich Sencha

I wrote a review a year ago as I struggled to make a consistently good pot of tea. Finally got the correct temperature and timing and now every cup is excellent and just what one hopes from Japanese sencha. I drink it every day, I am able to get 5 or 6 pourings each time. The taste gets milder, but with a floral sweetness that is likened to mountain flowers. I recommend this tea!

Fantastic!

Delicious sencha! I have tried both hot and cold brew and it seems no matter how you brew it's just fantastic tea!

Enrich Sencha Loose Leaf

This has become my favorite tea in the morning, before early meditation. It wakes me up in a gentle way.

Perfect Sencha

It smelled amazing as soon as I opened the bag, and tastes just as good as it smells! So deliciously rich and grassy-I crave it every day!

Fukamushi sencha

I drink Japanese sencha every day and always buy loose tea. This is my first experience with fukamushi sencha and the brewing is challenging. I bought a water thermometer to test the temperature is correct and also read brewing instructions online. I still don't get a good cup of tea. It is tasteless or mild after the first pour. I will keep trying as the other reviewers get better results. For me, the fine broken leaves which are close to dust, just don't bring out the flavor the same as the loose leaf normal sencha that I usually brew. (Uji sencha) I bought quite a lot of this tea so I hope I can find the brewing method for consistent flavor
