Description
This organic Icho Sencha is a rare and aromatic expression of Japanese green tea. Produced using a carefully controlled withering process prior to steaming, it showcases the distinctive floral character. Crafted from organically grown Benifuuki cultivated by Komaki Ryokuhouen in Minamisatsuma, Kagoshima Prefecture, this tea bridges the freshness of sencha with the captivating aromas developed through withering.
Founded in 1952, Komaki Ryokuhouen is now operated by the third generation of the Komaki family. The farm began organic cultivation in 1993 and continues to produce tea with a strong focus on craftsmanship and leaf quality. For this tea, producer Seigo Komaki carefully manages the withering process to encourage the natural floral character of Benifuuki while preserving the vibrant qualities of green tea. The inspiration comes from his childhood memories of tea factories during the Showa era, when less precise fresh-leaf management often allowed subtle withering aromas to develop naturally before processing.
The dry leaves offer an enchanting jasmine-like fragrance, reflecting the floral character developed during withering. In the cup, this Icho Sencha reveals a brilliant golden liquor and expressive notes of honeysuckle, lychee, fresh sugarcane, and young bamboo shoots (takenoko). The result is a vibrant and distinctive tea that highlights the unique character of Benifuuki while paying homage to the nostalgic aromas that once drifted through Japan's traditional tea factories.
