Description

Kukicha is a type of Japanese green tea crafted from the tender stems selected during the sencha refining process. These stems are valued for the distinct character they bring to the cup, offering a softer expression of green tea that differs from leaf-focused styles.

When brewed, this Kukicha reveals a gentle sweetness and subtle umami, accompanied by a light, floral aroma. Its calm, balanced profile makes it an ideal tea for unhurried moments, particularly in the afternoon or evening.

FAQ

What is kukicha?

Kukicha is a traditional Japanese green tea made primarily from the stems of the tea plant. It has a light, clean flavor with subtle sweetness and gentle vegetal note.

Where is this tea produced?

Our kukicha is produced at the Sugimoto Tea facility in Shizuoka, Japan, one of Japan’s most renowned tea-producing regions. After carefully sourced tea leaves arrive at our facility, our tea is finished and processed in-house to bring out the intended flavor, aroma, and character of each tea.

How do I brew kukicha?

Kukicha is best brewed with water below boiling temperature. We recommend following the brewing instructions provided for this tea, as using water that is too hot can draw out excessive astringency and bitterness while masking sencha’s delicate sweetness and umami.

For a traditional Japanese tea experience, kukicha can be brewed in a kyusu, a Japanese teapot designed specifically for green tea. Its fine mesh strainer allows the leaves to fully open while making it easy to pour the tea without loose leaves escaping into your cup.

Is there caffeine in kukicha?

Yes, kukicha naturally contains caffeine. Based on our laboratory testing, a serving prepared according to our recommended brewing instructions contains approximately 67 mg of caffeine. The actual amount can vary depending on factors such as water temperature, steeping time, tea-to-water ratio, and the amount of tea used.

Is kukicha roasted?

No. Our Kukicha is not roasted; it is steamed and processed similarly to sencha. Roasting would make it a hojicha, which has a darker brown color and more pronounced toasted flavor.

Great tea for decent cost

Delicious. It's a twig tea, light and flavorful, with the flavor profile of a much more expensive tea than it actually is. Light and grassy and complex flavors

The taste and smell, oh man !

When I first opened the pouch I was like ... Ahhh , I was in heaven , the aroma along with the flavor is top notch, a sweet grassy spinachy taste I enjoy every day !! Love this green tea

Taste great and no bitter aftertaste

I absolutely love this tea! I love tea and find that most teas are starting to taste more processed even with well-known companies. I have tried a few organic teas and find that the way they are processed does not work for me either. This tea taste great and does not seem to have a processed aftertaste.

Very fresh and great quality

This is really good as an ice tea and very easy to make. I add 1 1/2 tablespoon of the loose tea to 16 Oz of cool water ( not need to heat or boil water) and let it sit for 20 mins. Pour on ice and add some honey or other sweetener and it’s very refreshing.

Outstanding Kukicha

The loose leaf Kukicha was my 2nd repeat order of this tea. It has become my preferred tea before I start my day. It's subtle grassy flavor offers a refreshing balance between a cleansing, slight bitterness and the suggestion of sweetness. It is outstanding and quiet at once. I also bought a sample of loose Gyokuro. It is superb, having the qualities I enjoy in the Kukicha but with a deeper variety of flavors. I will probably alternate these in the mornings.

Delicious fresh, sweet taste

I have tried several brands of kukicha and this is the best! Every batch I've had has been fresh and delicious with a pleasing sweet flavor.

Kukicha loose leaf tea

I just reordered this tea as I so enjoyed the last bag. I tried Sugimoto tea just a few months ago having used a different brand and this is obviously much higher quality. I also recently ordered several sample packets of other teas to try and all have been excellent.
