Description
Named Haku (白), the Japanese word for white, this Katakuchi Chawan takes its name from the quiet clarity of its glaze. The simplicity of the white surface allows the form of the bowl—and the color of the tea itself—to remain the focus.
The Katakuchi Chawan addresses a practical challenge in matcha preparation when serving beyond a single bowl. Unlike a traditional chawan, which can make transferring matcha difficult and imprecise, the katakuchi form features a subtle spout that allows matcha to be poured cleanly into smaller cups or another vessel, minimizing waste and preserving the integrity of the tea. It is especially well suited for sharing matcha with others.
Finished in a refined white glaze, the Haku Katakuchi Chawan offers a clean, understated presence that highlights the vivid green of freshly whisked matcha. The interior provides ample space for proper whisking, while the controlled pour supports clarity and intention in service.
In addition to matcha preparation, the Katakuchi Chawan may also be used as a yuzamashi (water-cooling vessel). Simply pour hot water into the bowl, allow it to cool to the desired temperature, and then transfer it to your teapot—an essential step when brewing many Japanese green teas.
The Katakuchi Chawan holds up to 10 oz (300 ml). For matcha preparation, we recommend using approximately 3 oz (90 ml) of water.
About the Artist
Rito Aoshima (青嶋利陶) is a 2nd generation potter, whose father started the current studio in which he works. The studio was created to revitalize the Shitoro-Yaki style and preserve its over 900 year history. The kiln was built as a Noborigama (rising kiln), which has multiple levels staggered vertically to achieve an extremely hot firing temperature. Rito Aoshima studied pottery in Seto (a famous location for pottery), before returning to Shizuoka to study in the Shitoro-Yaki style. Later, he has assumed his father's studio and kiln, and continues to make teaware for tea ceremony, as well as other vessels with a focus on elegance.
